An overwhelming majority of dogs who raced at the Macau Canidrome in China, known for its extremely poor animal welfare standards and no capacity for rehoming, were sourced from Australia. While this Canidrome was permanently closed in 2018, greyhounds were confirmed being exported to China as recently as 2023.

In 2023, the ABC exposed a lucrative export industry where Australian greyhound trainers were selling dogs for up to $220,000 each and exporting them to China. In China, these dogs were being used to fuel a growing illegal racing industry.

An online breeding site, Greyhound YY, lists records from more than 700 Australian greyhounds obtained by breeders in China, dating back to 2006.
