Ban gas chambers in South Australia

On July 12th, we released footage from BMK Foods pig slaughterhouse in Murray Bridge, South Australia. We captured footage of hundreds of pigs being forced into a gas chamber with a painful electric prodder, before being lowered to an agonising death.

We watched as some pigs were left at the top of the chamber for over 20 minutes, gasping and shaking as they slowly suffocated to death. Others screamed and thrashed at the bottom of the chamber, throwing themselves against the bars in a futile effort to escape as the gas burnt their lungs.

This horrific practice must end! We are calling on the South Australian Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, Dr. Susan Close MP, to initiate a state inquiry into pig gassing and support a ban on gas chambers.

Thanks to our footage and public pressure, we have already succeeded in achieving a Victorian inquiry into pig slaughter and confinement, it’s time that other states followed suit.

I am writing to express my concern regarding the brutal and agonising deaths of pigs inside gas chambers at South Australian slaughterhouses. I recently watched the <a href="https://www.farmtransparency.org/facilities/7fdfe-bmk-food-slaughterhouse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">footage captured by Farm Transparency Project</a> at BMK Foods pig slaughterhouse in Murray Bridge, South Australia and was horrified by what I saw. The evidence of suffering and abuse was clear and I believe it calls for immediate action. 
The recent announcement of a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into pig welfare, including the gas stunning of pigs, has given me hope that perhaps something can be done about this archaic practice in South Australia as well. Given that the Victorian Greens and Animal Justice Party have both shown public support for a complete ban on the practice and the NSW Animal Justice Party has introduced legislation to make pig gas chambers illegal, I am writing to ask whether your department will also initiate an inquiry into pig gassing and support a ban on gas chambers.
I know that the team from Farm Transparency Project have repeatedly expressed that they are happy to meet with politicians and provide them with whatever evidence they need to take action, and I’m hoping that you will do better than our Federal Minister for Agriculture and choose to meet with them. The lack of accountability from some politicians has been incredibly disappointing and I hope that representatives from South Australia have more integrity. 
Like most Australians, I consider myself an animal lover and the thought of the terrifying final moments of these intelligent pigs fills me with horror. I am hoping that, in your capacity as Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water, you will stand up for the wellbeing of animals and support a ban. 
I am asking you to please take a stand against animal abuse and suffering, and call for a state inquiry. 
I look forward to your response.
