Gathercole's Wangaratta Abattoir
Gathercole's Slaughterhouse in Wangaratta VIC kills lambs/sheep, pigs, cows, goats and, on rare occasions, young calves who are "waste products" of the dairy industry. The facility has two separate killing rooms, one for cows where a captive bolt gun is used for stunning, the other for all other (smaller) animals where an electric stunner is used.
Brief sections of the hidden camera footage from this facility were seen in our 2014 documentary Lucent, however we are now working on releasing more of this footage, starting with the slaughter of young lambs.
An employee at Gathercole's Abattoir has spoken of incidents where pigs have been incorrectly stunned or "stuck" so that they are still alive when they are tipped into the scalding tank, drowning in the hot water. While the footage did not capture any such incident during the brief period in which the cameras were in place, numerous lambs are incorrectly stunned (and therefore conscious) when their throats are cut.
