In late 2023 and early 2024, a team of covert investigators from the animal protection organisation Farm Transparency Project, set out on a mission to install concealed cameras inside the Victorian piggery, Midland Bacon. Unbeknownst to them, what they would uncover would go far beyond the usual horrors hiding behind the closed doors of factory farms in Australia.
In a new documentary from the producers of Lucent and Dominion, animal activist Sophie Wilcher will take viewers through the investigation that revealed the sexual abuse and r*pe of a mother pig - later named Olivia but first known by the number on her ear tag 8416 - and the global movement for justice that developed in its aftermath.
With testimony from investigators involved, behind the scenes footage and interviews with experts in law and politics, this documentary will not only tell the story of what happened to Olivia, it will explore why and how such a horrific act could have ever taken place, and what must change to ensure it never does again.
Part 1
In early 2024, when investigators retrieved hidden cameras which had been installed inside the farrowing shed at Midland Bacon Piggery, they discovered that they had captured more than just the routine practices performed on piglets - they had captured footage of a worker r*ping a sow. After immediately handing the evidence of the crime over to the police, the story broke on ABC 7.30 and a petition was started calling for the release of the sow to a sanctuary. Edited by Catriona Marshall. Featuring interviews with Sophie Wilcher, Catriona Marshall, Siena Callander and Harley McDonald-Eckersall.
Part 2
After Olivia's abuse was made public, animal activist Sophie Wilcher struggles to understand how something so terrible could have happened, and what's stopping it from happening again. Meanwhile, investigators decide to take matters into their own hands and begin to search for Olivia's whereabouts. Edited by Harley McDonald-Eckersall. Featuring interviews with Sophie Wilcher, Harley McDonald-Eckersall, Catriona Marshall, Emma Hurst, Dr Liz Hicks and Siena Callander.
