"Supreme Poultry is Australia’s largest processor of spent hens (old egg-laying hens)"

 - Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL), “Supreme Poultry,” Food Innovation Australia. https://www.fial.com.au/supreme-poultry.

Record as at 20 May 2026

Supreme Poultry is an independent (established 1984, Peter Attard and family) that kills and processes chickens and "spent" hens for domestic and export markets. The Mangrove Mountain site is owned by Attard Racing Pty Ltd, with Supreme operating as the tenant. Approximately 107 employees across two slaughterhouses.

The company specialises in spent hens, laying hens that have come to the end of their exploited cycle in the egg industry, describing itself as "a family owned company that processes spent hens (laying hens that have come to the end of their productive lives)".

Supreme kills approximately 3,000 birds per hour at Mangrove Mountain, producing over 37,000 kg of dead birds daily.

Facilities: Mangrove Mountain (Central Coast NSW, primary site, acquired 2014, EPA Licence 1556) and Shanes Park (western Sydney NSW, ~1999).

Legal history: In December 2014 Supreme began killing live birds at Mangrove Mountain without development consent, breaching a 1994 consent condition explicitly prohibiting abattoir use. The EPA issued a prevention notice and Gosford Council wrote to Supreme advising the activity was unauthorised. Supreme applied to modify the consent in January 2015; it was approved in March 2015. Competitor Cordina Chicken Farms challenged the approval in the NSW Land and Environment Court. The court upheld the approval in July 2015, finding the addition of live bird killing was "substantially the same development." Cordina was ordered to pay costs. The court also found Supreme had erected two structures without consent, a live bird holding facility (the Lairage) and an Offal Tower, and declared both illegal, but suspended enforcement for 8 weeks given the impact on 23 workers.

EPA enforcement: January 2016 inspection found effluent ponds overflowing, irrigation areas poorly managed, and wastewater system inadequate at Mangrove Mountain. EPA issued two $15,000 penalty notices (total $30,000) and six Official Cautions in March 2016. A separate penalty was issued for non-compliance at Shanes Park in February 2016, with two sites cited within the same year and EPA publicly flagging repeat non-compliance. Ongoing wastewater remediation required (active since February 2024). Annual compliance filings: 2021-22 non-compliant; otherwise compliant 2020-25.
