Investigators from Farm Transparency Project have uncovered the widespread use of sow stalls in Victorian piggeries, five years after the industry claimed to have phased them out.

See the investigation and take action at farmtransparency.org/campaigns.

Sow stalls are small cages in which mother pigs are individually confined prior to giving birth. In these cages, they are unable to turn around; they can only stand up, lie down, or take one or two steps forwards or backwards.

Hidden cameras reveal that sows are kept in these cages for up to 27 days.

One of six piggeries filmed by investigators this year is owned by Sunpork, the largest pig farming company in Australia and a major supplier to Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Costco. Sunpork is telling consumers they’ve eliminated sow stalls, and selling their products as sow-stall free, yet they are still caging sows, while proudly declaring their certification by the industry’s Quality Assurance Program (APIQ).

This industry is never going to stop using sow stalls voluntarily. We’re calling on the Andrews Government to legislate a complete ban on sow stalls, including gestation stalls, mating stalls, and any other phrase the industry wants to use to describe small cages for mother pigs.
