Cruelty summary (long) - Ralph's Meats

Hidden cameras installed by Farm Transparency Project in early 2024 reveal the brutal slaughter of 'beef' and dairy cows at Ralph's Meats, in Seymour, Victoria. This is the long edit of footage sent in a formal complaint to Primesafe and the federal Department of Agriculture (which regulates export slaughterhouses).

Among other things, the video evidence shows:

  • Workers repeatedly swinging gates into frightened cows to attempt to herd them into the race, as well as aggressively prodding them with an electric prodder, even when they have nowhere to go.
  • Extremely emaciated cows, many of them dairy breeds and the majority of them appearing to be pregnant or to have recently given birth, being prodded with electric prodders while being herded up the race and into the knockbox.
  • Cows displaying injuries while in the race, including one cow with a severe prolapse and others with blood on their backs, heads or legs.
  • Cows displaying signs of distress and fear, including refusing to move, attempting to mount each other, trying to climb the walls of the race and jumping into the metal walls of the race.
  • Cows retaining consciousness after multiple stunning attempts and having their throats slit while fully conscious.
  • Cows continuing to blink and attempt to move after their throats have been cut and while they bleed out.
