Mt Barker Chicken is a Western Australian free-range chicken operation commenced in 2001 in the Great Southern region around the Mt Barker township. It is a trading name of Milne AgriGroup Pty Ltd, owned by the Laitt family. They operate under the Milne ABN/ACN
Animals: Chickens are confined on farms in the Great Southern region and killed at a facility in Kendenup. No annual kill figure has been publicly disclosed. Mt Barker Chicken claims to be the first meat chicken producer in Australia to receive RSPCA Approved certification, and claims to be the only producer meeting the RSPCA's outdoor free-range standard. Mt Barker claims chickens are "free to roam during daylight hours" and have "spacious barns".
Operations: Grow-out farms are located in the Great Southern region. Slaughter is conducted at Kendenup. Products are distributed primarily across Western Australia through major supermarkets, butchers and restaurants, with some distribution into eastern states. Mt Barker supplies Ross breed day-old chicks from an independent hatchery and feed from parent company Milne AgriGroup.
