Golden Cockerel Pty Ltd

Golden Cockerel Pty Ltd is a Queensland-based vertically integrated poultry producer and processor, operating from its processing facility at Mount Cotton, south-east of Brisbane.

The Benfer family commenced poultry operations at Mt Cotton in 1933; Golden Cockerel Pty Ltd was formed in 1972 as a joint venture with the Elk family, who remain co-owners today.

The company operates feed mills, hatcheries, parent farms, broiler farms, a processing plant and distribution. It is closely linked to Darwalla Group, the Benfer family's separate growing operation which supplies birds to Golden Cockerel for processing. It supplies major retailers, quick service restaurants, specialty poultry outlets and butchers across Queensland, and exports to the Pacific region.

The company kills in excess of 34 million chickens per year at its Mount Cotton abattoir, representing approximately 20% of Queensland's chicken meat production, with the combined Golden Cockerel and Darwalla growing network raising an estimated 44 million chickens annually.
