Businessman lays eyes on Anakie land to build mega chicken farm
A BUSINESSMAN has laid his eyes on a patch of Geelong land to build a chicken farm capable of producing about 2.16 million birds annually, after a similar project was scuttled by a rural community last year.
Pavilion Farms owner Michael Vukadinovic has submitted a planning application to the City of Greater Geelong to build a $9 million chicken broiler farm on a Carrs Rd property in Anakie, near the company's existing chicken farms.
The proposed development will be for six, 4,044sq m sheds to be built, each capable of holding 66,666 chickens – allowing for up to 400,000 chickens to be kept on the farm at any one time.
The farm will aim to produce about 5.4 batches of birds each year, with chicks raised to chickens over about seven weeks before being harvested for meat, with the sheds then undergoing about 17 days of cleaning and preparation for the next batch.
