Multimillion dollar piggery proposed for Harden Shire

Big regional New South Wales piggery, Blantyre Farms, is proposing to build a new $12m operation.

The Young based Blantyre wants to build 21 sheds on the Eulie Road south of Harden, split into breeder and grower sites.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), lodged with Harden Shire Council, says the breeder site would house up to 7,400 pigs and the grower site 18,000 animals.

There are plans to build a 'methane digestion system' on site to capture biogas produced from the site's main effluent dam, to use to run a generator which will power the farm.

The EIS says the project would employ 20 people and the farm would aim to source locally grown grain for pig feed.

The application says liquid effluent will be spread at least 10 metres from the property's boundaries and 25 metres from creeks.

The EIS acknowledges that neighbours have already raised concerns about truck movements, odour and the pig sheds impact on visual amenity.

Blantyre's application says the farm will emit odours, but that its Young operation has not had a odour complaint in five years.

Comments can be lodged with the Harden Council until February 5.
