Cedar Meats Part 1 - bobby calves (instagram)

Cedar Meats is an export approved, multi-species slaughterhouse which operates just 20 minutes from Melbourne's central business district. Every week, this facility kills thousands of sheep and goats, as well as five-day-old bobby calves, discarded as waste from the dairy industry. With round the clock, on-site security, getting inside to monitor their treatment of animals is difficult and dangerous. But not impossible.

In 2024, investigators from Farm Transparency Project installed hidden cameras at Cedar Meats, capturing the handling and slaughter of thousands of animals, including newborn lambs and kids born in the holding pens of the slaughterhouse.

The footage shows multiple disturbing acts, including:

Bobby calves, goats and sheep killed while still conscious or showing signs of consciousness after they have had their throats slit.

Baby goats struggling and suffering for over six hours after being shot with a bolt gun.

Workers using the bodies of goats and sheep as toys, writing their names on them in blood, leaving bloody handprints and even seeming to eat part of their body while on the kill floor.

A newborn goat, born in the stunning restraint, whose mother is violently killed seconds after she gives birth.

Bobby calves, sheep and goats being thrown, shoved and dragged to force them into the kill room.
