Southern Meats Pty Ltd operates a sheep and lamb slaughterhouse at Mazamet Road, Goulburn, New South Wales, owned by the Western Australian Meat Marketing Co-operative Limited (WAMMCO). The facility was originally built by Goulburn City Council in the 1970s and subsequently operated privately before being acquired by WAMMCO in June 2012 for an undisclosed sum. It operates under the Southern Meats name with product sold under the Fine Brand label for export.
Animals: The facility slaughters sheep and lambs. No current annual kill figure has been released. Historical combined figures for Goulburn and the now closed Harden facility was estimated at 65,000 "tonnes" for the year ending December 2002.
Operations: The Goulburn slaughterhouse processes sheep and lambs for domestic supply and export, distributing internationally under the Fine Brand label. The facility is AUS-MEAT registered as an export abattoir. WAMMCO also operates abattoirs at Linley Valley and Katanning in Western Australia.
Opposition: On 8 April 2019, nine animal protection activists entered the facility on Mazamat Road at approximately 2.30am as part of a nationally coordinated day of action marking the one-year anniversary of the Dominion documentary. The activists chained themselves to a conveyor belt and refused to leave.
Environmental record: In April 2025 a fault in the abattoir's wastewater treatment system caused untreated water to discharge into an onsite dam, generating strong odours described by residents as decaying waste drifting across parts of Goulburn. The NSW EPA received approximately nine community complaints, conducted odour surveys, and traced the source to the Mazamet Road facility. In September 2025 the EPA fined Southern Meats $30,000.
