Record as at 2 June 2026
Western Australian Meat Marketing Co-operative Limited, trading as WAMMCO International, is a producer-owned co-operative with origins in the Western Australian Lamb Marketing Board established by the WA Government in 1971. Incorporated as a co-operative in 1999, it is owned by more than 800 farmer-members across Western Australia. It operates two slaughterhouses: Katanning in Western Australia's Great Southern region, and Goulburn in New South Wales, the latter acquired from Southern Meats Pty Ltd in June 2012. Revenue was approximately A$500 million in 2025.
Animals: WAMMCO slaughters sheep and lambs across its two facilities, killing up to 50,000 animals per week combined.
Operations: WAMMCO sources, slaughters and exports lamb and mutton to international markets including supermarkets and restaurants globally. By-products from slaughter are processed for animal feed and biofuel. Product is marketed under the WAMMCO International and Fine Brand labels.
Workforce: In December 2022 a foreign worker at the Katanning abattoir was killed after being drawn into the unguarded opening of a machine known as a cake press while carrying out a daily shutdown procedure, suffering fatal crush injuries. WAMMCO pleaded guilty in the Albany Magistrates Court in August 2025 to failing to provide and maintain a safe work environment and causing the death of the worker. WAMMCO was fined $785,000 and ordered to pay more than $5,700 in costs. WorkSafe WA subsequently inspected 19 abattoirs across Western Australia and issued compliance notices at multiple facilities for inadequate machine guarding and other safety failures.
