2700 animal welfare breaches lost in red tape
A whopping 2700 reports of animal welfare issues at export abattoirs have been filed in four years - but the tangle of state and federal bureaucracy means there is no clear way of knowing how many have been investigated or their outcome.
The federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry revealed the 2700 animal welfare incident reports were made by export abattoir management or on-site vets "at, during or after transport" between January 1, 2022 and November 24, 2025, in response to a recent Senate estimates request from Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi.
