Piglets nursing from a sow in a farrowing crate

Sows are moved to farrowing crates a week before they give birth then confined in these crates up to six weeks while their piglets nurse from them. Farrowing crates are approximately the length of a sows body leaving her only enough room to stand up, lie down and take one or two steps forwards and back, without turning around.
