When most people think of racehorses, they tend to think of the 'thoroughbred' breed used in flat and jump racing. Meanwhile, the harness racing industry, responsible for breeding around 5000 'standardbred' horses each year and with a turnover in 2018 of $3 billion, has managed to escape the recent wastage scandals.
Yet their discarded horses meet the same end at the knackery.
