Rennie Pig Breeder and Weaner Farm (Proposed) (proposed or under construction)
Record as of 24 May 2026
Rennie Pig Breeder and Weaner Farm Operator: JBS Pork Australia Pty Ltd SSD: 104192210 Status: Environmental Impact Statement in preparation
Site proposal The Rennie Pig Breeder and Weaner Farm is a proposed intensive pig confinement facility for approximately 73,400 pigs — comprising up to 35,000 breeding pigs and up to 38,400 weaner pigs — across 11 enclosed sheds on a 25-hectare footprint at 284 Wongalea Road, Rennie, approximately 28 km north-west of Corowa. The site is a new facility on land previously used for cropping, within a total landholding of approximately 888 hectares. Unlike the other JBS facilities in the group, this farm both breeds pigs and holds the resulting weaner pigs on site before they are transported to the Corowa operation for raising and slaughter. The facility operates up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Odour Odour is generated from three sources: the pig sheds, wastewater treatment ponds, and irrigation of treated effluent across surrounding land. The proponent acknowledges pig odour cannot be prevented. With both breeders and weaners on site simultaneously, the odour load at this facility is greater than at the breeder-only farms.
Wastewater & effluent Pig waste and washdown water are collected and treated through on-site anaerobic, settling and polishing ponds. Treated effluent is irrigated across surrounding cropping land on the site.
Water extraction The facility will extract up to 200 megalitres of groundwater per year from on-site bores — equivalent to around 80 Olympic swimming pools annually.
Noise Noise sources include pigs during morning feeding, truck movements, tractors, ventilation fans, feed equipment and pumps. With both breeding sows and weaner pigs on site, the noise profile is more complex than at a breeder-only facility.
Traffic & road access The site is accessed via Lucelle Road, an unsealed local road, connecting directly to the Riverina Highway. Weekly heavy vehicle movements include 8 B-doubles plus 25 staff vehicles per day and multiple light vehicles. Road upgrades to Lucelle Road and its intersection with the Riverina Highway may be required.
Relationship to other JBS facilities The Rennie farm is the largest of the new JBS facilities by pig numbers. Unlike the other four proposals, it is not described in the documents as directly replacing a function previously undertaken at the Corowa site — it represents an additional expansion of JBS's total regional capacity. Its EIS is required to address the cumulative impact of all five JBS piggery proposals in the Federation Council area, being the Corowa Grower Farm (SSD-93652960), Mulwala Nucleus Pig Farm (SSD-94413231), Coreen Pig Breeder Farm (SSD-94413235) and the Lowesdale Breeder Farm (SSD-93649710).
