Mulwala Nucleus Pig Farm (Proposed) (proposed or under construction)
Record as of 24 May 2026
Mulwala Nucleus Pig Farm Operator: JBS Pork Australia Pty Ltd SSD: 94413231 Status: Environmental Impact Statement in preparation
Site proposal The Mulwala Nucleus Pig Farm is a proposed intensive pig confinement facility for approximately 25,000 pigs, comprising 13 enclosed sheds on a 23-hectare footprint at Rosewood Park Road, Mulwala, approximately 8 km north-east of Mulwala township. The site is a new facility on land previously used for cropping, within a total landholding of approximately 344 hectares. This is a nucleus farm — it houses the core genetic breeding stock from which pigs for all other JBS facilities in the region are ultimately derived. The facility operates up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Odour Odour is generated from three sources: the pig sheds, wastewater treatment ponds, and irrigation of treated effluent across surrounding land. The proponent acknowledges pig odour cannot be prevented. NSW Health has noted that the effluent irrigation area is closer than 1,300 metres to the nearest home.
Wastewater & effluent Pig waste and washdown water are collected and treated through on-site anaerobic, settling and polishing ponds. Treated effluent is irrigated across surrounding cropping land on the site.
Water extraction The facility will extract up to 200 megalitres of groundwater per year from on-site bores — equivalent to around 80 Olympic swimming pools annually. Lake Mulwala is approximately 5 km from the site.
Noise Noise sources include pigs during morning feeding, truck movements, tractors, ventilation fans, feed equipment and pumps.
Traffic & road access The site is accessed via Rosewood Park Road, an unsealed local road, connecting via McCurdies Lane to Bull Plain Road approximately 1.7 km to the south-east. Federation Council has noted that Rosewood Park Road is only 7 metres wide and McCurdies Lane is only 4.2–4.3 metres wide, and has stated that road upgrades will be required to accommodate the volume and weight of heavy vehicle movements. Weekly heavy vehicle movements include 8 B-doubles plus 25 staff vehicles per day and multiple light vehicles.
Relationship to other JBS facilities Mulwala is the genetic foundation of the entire JBS pork operation in the region — the nucleus stock bred here ultimately supplies the breeder farms at Lowesdale and Coreen, whose progeny are then raised and slaughtered at Corowa. It is one of five concurrent JBS piggery proposals in the Federation Council area.
