Baiada Oakburn Integrated Poultry Processing Facility (proposed or under construction)
Baiada Oakburn Integrated Poultry Processing Facility
Record date May 2026
Address 1154 Gunnedah Road, Westdale NSW 2340. Lot 100 on DP1097471. Site area 57.6 hectares. Located approximately 7.5km northwest of Tamworth CBD, north of Tamworth Regional Airport.
Owner/operator Baiada (Tamworth) Pty Limited, a subsidiary of the privately owned Baiada Group, which also operates the Steggles brand.
Capacity Approved to slaughter up to 3 million chickens per week across two slaughter lines of 15,000 birds per hour each. The facility also includes a protein recovery plant approved to render up to 1,680 tonnes of by-products per week. Based on ABS data for the December 2025 quarter, Australia's national chicken kill is running at approximately 14.7 million per week; if Oakburn were operating at full approved capacity, it would account for approximately 20% of that national total from a single site.
The ACMF has cited 2 million birds per week as the capacity of Australia's largest existing poultry processing facility, though this figure may be outdated; if accurate, Oakburn at full capacity would exceed it by 50%. A separate Baiada facility at Hanwood NSW received approval in 2016 to expand to 2.8 million birds per week, which if realised would make the margin considerably smaller.
Status Building substantially complete as of approximately mid-2025 based on aerial imagery. Operational status as of May 2026 unconfirmed. Outstanding regulatory steps include a variation to the existing Environment Protection Licence and determination of a dangerous goods modification (SSD-9394-Mod-5, in assessment). No commissioning announcement has been located. The facility is intended to replace Baiada's existing Out Street slaughterhouse in West Tamworth, which is to be closed on Oakburn's commencement.
Approvals State Significant Development consent SSD-9394, approved 18 December 2020. Modified via Mod-1 (May 2024), Mod-3 (August 2025) and Mod-4 (November 2025).
Context Adjacent to the existing Baiada Oakburn Rendering Plant (EPL 7566), operational since at least 2000. The surrounding area includes the Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange, Teys Australia's beef slaughterhouse, and Thomas Foods International's Tamworth facility.

Artist's impression of the Oakburn processing plant currently under construction at Tamworth adjacent to Baiada's existing rendering plant. Image: Baiada AUSTRALIA'S largest poultry meat producer, Baiada, is moving forward with a major expansion in New South Wales' New England region, committing over $300 million to build and upgrade facilities. It is understood the expansion will see Baiada's regional grain, pulse and oilseed use will go up to 445,000 tonnes per year.
