Cow with large udder
The floors of zero graze barns are concrete which is hard on cows joints and hooves. They are often covered in mud and waste. Milked up to three times a day to encourage extreme production, cows will often experience swollen, inflamed and painful udders. Conditions such as mastitis are also common.
In intensive dairy factory farms, cows are housed in large sheds where they are fed grain, hay and other fodder. Up to three times daily, they walk a short distance to a milking shed. These cows have no access to fresh grass and are not able to graze freely.
