Thomas Foods International - Stawell Abattoir
Record as at 2 June 2026.
The Stawell abattoir at 46 Abattoir Road, Stawell, in the Northern Grampians region of Victoria, is a sheep, lamb and goat slaughterhouse operating as Frew Foods International under establishment number 053.
The facility was founded by Max Holmes in 1965 and bought by Archie Frew in 1984, with his son Robert Frew taking over management in 1999. Thomas Foods International acquired a 50 percent stake in July 2020 and took full ownership in 2023.
The slaughterhouse killed about 1.5 million sheep and lambs per year before a $40 to $50 million expansion, opened in May 2025, that nearly doubled capacity to more than 2.3 million lambs per year and lifted the workforce to around 600. It can kill more than 6,000 lambs, sheep and goats per shift, and is a key supplier to Woolworths, Aldi and export markets, with access to China and the European Union. It is one of TFI's small stock slaughterhouses, which together kill over 160,000 animals per week.
